The educational program "Canary Islands: a volcanic window in the Atlantic" visits Santiago del Teide

A bet of the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN) to contribute to the reduction of the volcanic risk in the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands educational program: a volcanic window in the Atlantic returns to the municipalities of the Canary Islands in face-to-face format in order to bring volcanos and volcanic risk management closer to Canarian society.

This program organised by the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN), an entity dependent on the Cabildo of Tenerife, will be present in Santiago del Teide on November 14, 15 and 16, specifically, at the Social Centre of Tamaimo from 7:00 p.m.

The ultimate goal of this program is to contribute to making the Canary Islands a better informed and organised community in the face of volcanic risk to become much less vulnerable than a community that does not know or ignore the volcanic threats that surround it, and is not organised to respond to them.

The funding for the development of these activities on the island of Tenerife is channelled thanks to the project "Strengthening the resilience of the municipalities of Tenerife against volcanic risk," co-financed by the Cabildo de Tenerife and the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER). In this new edition, the educational program has the collaboration of the Volcanological Society of Spain (SVE) and the Canarian Volcanology Association (ACANVOL) as well as that of the 31 municipalities that will host the conference.

Specific objectives and contents of the three educational days

The first day aims to inform and educate attendees about the different dangers associated with the volcanic phenomenon through the screening of a documentary prepared by INVOLCAN and Televisión Española en Canarias "Understanding the Volcanic Dangers", as well as the subsequent debate on the content of the documentary and the participation of the attendees in a question and answer game known as the Volcanic Trivial in order to strengthen their knowledge and learning about the different volcanic dangers.

The second day aims to inform and educate the audience about the conceptual difference between volcanic danger and volcanic risk by projecting the documentary "Reducing Volcanic Risk", edited by the Association of Chemistry and Volcanology of the Interior of the Earth (IAVCEI) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). After the screening, a debate will be promoted with the audience, as well as the participation of the attendees in a second Volcanic Trivial in order to strengthen their knowledge and learning about volcanic risk management.

On the third day, attendees will be able to know that in our territory they can find "footprints" of all the different dangers associated with the volcanic phenomenon that have been announced on the first day, as well as the frequency with which these various volcanic dangers occur. Likewise, on this third day, it is intended that the attendees know how the Canarian society, as a whole, is materialising the management of volcanic risk in the Canary Islands and the degree of compliance with the actions recommended by the international scientific and political community for this purpose. As in the previous days, attendees will participate in a third Volcanic Trivial in order to strengthen their knowledge and learning about the volcanic phenomenon and volcanic risk management in the Canary Islands.
